There are moments in life that forever divide our stories into before and after. For Melissa Miller, that moment came on March 24, 2025. One week before his twenty-first birthday, her youngest son, Aidan Patrick McLaughlin, died by suicide.
Like every mother, Melissa saw extraordinary promise in her son. Aidan was intelligent, athletic, creative, compassionate, and deeply loved. His presence filled every room he entered, and those who knew him recognized the remarkable young man he was becoming. Yet despite the love surrounding him, Aidan struggled to see in himself what so many others saw so clearly. He could not see his own promise.
While nothing can erase that loss, Melissa made a decision that Aidan’s life would continue to matter—not only through memory, but through meaningful action. From that decision, the Aidan Patrick Promise Foundation was born.

Aidan Patrick’s Promise Foundation is led by an accomplished educational leader who has served at every level of education—from Educator, Coach, Principal, Academic Director, to State Regional Literacy Director for the Florida Department. Most recently, Melissa J Miller led the Science of Reading Journey and facilitated the Comprehensive Evidence-Based Reading Plan for Broward County Public Schools with clear improvement in reading outcomes. Under Melissa’s guidance & direction, Broward made an exceptional improvement of 11% in grade level reading.
With experience at every level of leadership in school leadership, district administration, charter school administration, and state level leadership, Melissa brings an unique perspective in curriculum development & adoption, leadership & literacy coaching, and educational improvement. Throughout her career, Melissa continues to be unwavering in making decisions based in evidence of improved student outcomes—not adult opinion or preference.

North Star Promise Academy
This innovative charter school is slated to open in August 2027. It is based on the motto:
“Where AI and Humanity Meet with Integrity.”
The students day is structured with traditional learning facilitated by exceptional teachers and infused with ethical AI use. In addition, the students will study and develop what makes us human. This may include literature, philosophy, history, languages, arts, music, & dance. Lastly, students will work on passion projects that help others. This will help develop the hope and purpose of every student.
